NEWS -December 2011

NOAA's NW Fisheries Science Center and the Center for Whale Research have confirmed that on December 17, 39-year old J16 (Slick) gave birth to a new baby calf in Puget Sound, probably only a few hours judging from the fresh fetal folds, before being seen and photographed by veteran field researcher Candice Emmons of NWSFC. This makes J16's fifth calf since her first, J26, was born in 1991. She was the sixteenth J pod orca photographed and identified by Mike Bigg in 1972, and is among the oldest whose age is known exactly. Her matriline is known as the J7's after J16's late mother.

Real Adventures Departing from SALT SPRING ISLAND,

The proposal would see the body of water between Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland become the Salish Sea to honour aboriginal settlement of the area that predates European exploration by thousands of years.

The Strait of Georgia was originally named by Captain George Vancouver, one of the first Europeans to arrive in 1792, in honour of King George III.

The Straight of Georgia separates the southwest mainland coast of B.C. from Vancouver Islands.
(Province of British Columbia Shore Unit Map Gallery) De Jong said he's in favour of renaming the busy waterway that divides Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, saying it would help identify geographical places in the province where aboriginal history can be reflected.

"It's a history of this place that extends beyond just 150 years. I liked the sound of the Salish Sea," he said.

"At this point, it's an idea and I'm interested enough to pursue it."

However, de Jong said the name change would likely be a complex process.

The term Salish, refers to Coast Salish, the original language of the aboriginal inhabitants of the protected coast, including present-day Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, the east coast of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, the lower parts of the Fraser River, and Puget Sound in Washington State.

Archeological evidence indicates the area was first settled roughly 9000 years ago, after the retreat of the last ice age.

Chemainus First Nation representative George Harris pitched the idea of renaming the strait to de Jong at an aboriginal summit on Friday in Vancouver.

De Jong called the proposal "an idea whose time has come," and pledged to put it before the provincial cabinet for discussion.

First Nations Culture and Traditional Activities
There are many Coast Salish First Nations who have long and continuous ties to the Gulf Islands. The Coast Salish people have special ties to the environment—a spiritual connection to the land, the earth and the water. Their knowledge of natural systems has been passed down from generation to generation through oral histories. Over millennia and to this day, the forests and seas have provided them with food, materials for everyday life and places for spiritual contemplation. First Nations scientific and traditional knowledge are being used in parallel with modern science to help park managers make decisions on how to restore and maintain park ecosystems.

The ocean has always been their central source of food—a rich harvest of seals, sea lions, whales, six-gilled shark, porpoise, shellfish, halibut, salmon and other fish. Duck hunting, trapping, hunting deer and small mammals and the harvesting of berries and plants are done in rhythm with the seasons. First Nations can pursue traditional activities—including hunting and harvesting of plants and other materials—within the national park reserve. Parks Canada works with First Nations to ensure that these activities are done in ways that respect the conservation of species and the ecosystem, and in a manner that does not endanger the safety of other park users. Watch for the warning signboards that are placed at access points when hunting is in progress.

First Nations Cultural Heritage Sites
First Nations people have resided in and used the Gulf Islands for thousands of years. We are reminded of their long-time presence by the layers of shells found at various sites throughout the park. These tell us that First Nations people had villages or camped at these locations while they made use of local natural resources. Archaeologists are able to determine the type of use at a site by the amount of layered shell: larger deposits indicate a village site.

First Nations people value these sites as part of their history and as tangible evidence of their connection to the land. These sites are also meaningful to us all for the rich and complex perspective that they add to the history of the park, and require our respect and protection. You can help by leaving them undisturbed and using the provided stairs to avoid walking on the face of the shell layers.

If you see suspicious behaviour or witness desecration of any cultural site, please contact us. It is illegal to remove cultural objects from the park; if you find artifacts, leave them in place, and notify park staff. Park managers are working with local First Nations to develop protocols for caring for cultural objects and sites found within the park

These islands are representative of the Strait of Georgia Lowlands, one of the most ecologically at risk natural regions in southern Canada. The first new national park reserve of the twenty-first century includes thirty-five square kilometres of land and intertidal area on fifteen islands, numerous islets and reefs, and approximately twenty-six square kilometres of marine areas. We encourage you to experience this exceptional coastal island landscape and the cultures of the people who live here so that the memories you take home are those that last a lifetime in your heart but leave no lasting trace on park ecosystems.
